Stranger things filmaffinity

Speaking of story, one of the big flaws that the first season of ‘Stranger Things’ had is that if you take away all the eighties magic, the story was rather weak with the relationship between the kids and the mysterious Eleven. Very well done, but somewhat mediocre. This time the Duffer brothers propose a more complex story, with the upside down and their beings directly threatening the tranquility of Hawkins.
On the one hand Hopper begins the second season investigating the mysterious death of the pumpkin crops and it will be clear to him that this dark dimension has something to do with it. Jonathan and Nancy investigate on their own about what happened to Barb and Joyce will be aware that the visions that her son has are not imaginations caused by a trauma, but something else.
The screenwriters warned that, taking advantage of the fact that it was going to be released around Halloween (and in fact, it is set during the 1984 Halloween), they were going to get rid of the adventure tone to propose a horror story. More «scary» than horror, always with an eighties inspiration. Thus we find ourselves with a season that is closer to the saga of ‘Alien’ and ‘The Thing’ than to ‘Halloween’ and the like. The creatures to defeat? The demogorgons.

With this string of new characters, the 9 episodes of the second season of Stranger Things (which last between 45 minutes and an hour each) start off, bringing together all these newcomers and mixing them with all the other characters, in such a way that the footage has a lot to cover. Being honest, that takes its toll: not all of them are as well developed as they deserve to be and, when it seems that they are going to be key to the story, they fall by the wayside. It would not have been necessary to prepare more chapters, perhaps it would have been enough to reduce the time devoted to other aspects, such as the already tiresome love triangle between Nancy, John and Steve or the flashbacks that explain the close connection between Hopper and Eleven.
The showrunners, the Duffer brothers, are well aware that, for everyone, Eleven is the favorite character of the series, so they have dosed her quite a lot along the plot to keep us expectant. She is crucial in the events, but this time she will do it from a perspective far from the youthful quartet of protagonists. In fact, that «this is another Goonies» feeling dissipates quite a bit in season 2 of Stranger Things, as the groups are more divided and the events pull less on the idea of innocent adventures. Instead, they dare something more (without abusing, of course), with action and even terror. Those responsible for the film already said that on this occasion they were going to look at films like those of James Cameron (Terminator 2).

Stranger things season 2 reviews

The Hawkins kids -and their relatives and neighbors-, as we have already said, know a very successful evolution: Joyce improves in a remarkable way with the help of Bob, who is a great addition to the story; Madmax is another success, although he has more difficulty to show off; while Chief Hopper continues to grow for the better; Dustin and Lucas, the funniest of the initial quartet, carry the weight of the team, they have grown up but they are still themselves, they mature, they are interested in Max, but as befits their age, and naturally they have been given more screen time than before. Will has a more complicated role, the boy who was abducted plays in the horror register rather than the pre-teen, and he shines.

Stranger things 2 filmaffinity

Although it may seem like an eternity ago for all of us who devoured it in one sitting on the day of its premiere, it’s been a couple of weeks since Netflix released the brand new second season of what is probably its star series: ‘Stranger Things’.
The start of this new season is not that it has been particularly dizzying, having opted the Duffer’s to take their time to build the return to normality of the protagonists -the essence of the series- and introduce the new additions as Bob, Max and his infamous stepbrother Billy. Luckily the third chapter begins to step -slightly- on the accelerator and to amend the lack of rhythm with the first big cliffhanger and detonator of the main conflict.
Good things come to those who wait, and after the coitus interruptus of the previous chapter, which left us in suspense after one of the most unnerving cliffhangers of the series, ‘Stranger Things 2’ finally deploys its artillery in a final bang that gives us all at once what it has deprived us of in its previous seven hours. Action, dynamism, and a sense of constant dramatic progression that gives us the best of the season during its wonderful and emotional anticlimax. Oh, Dustin, how we adore you.
