adela cortina biography

The entry of the Taliban into Afghanistan, the withdrawal of Western troops and the attacks on Kabul airport have so far been the most recent episode in a story that has terrible consequences for the Afghan people, especially for collaborators with foreign countries and for women. It is an urgent challenge for the international community to try to prevent this suffering, to create a humanitarian corridor, to continue with the evacuations, to welcome refugees, to enter into dialogue with the Taliban and to help from within the country towards a possible democratization.
The coronavirus pandemic has launched a global and local challenge that affects in principle the health of individual people and is taking with it a great number of lives. How not to remember these days Max von Sydow, the recently deceased Swedish actor, who portrayed in The Seventh Seal the figure of the knight who plays chess with death a game, lost in advance, in that gloomy medieval setting of processions of flagellants terrified by the plague. Or the masterful description of the plague of 1630 in Milan offered by Manzoni in The Betrothed. Or García Márquez’s brilliant account in Love in the Time of Cholera…. Continue reading «

You have affirmed that humanity has indeed seen moral progress, although there are people who now feel hopeless and perceive that there is a regression. What progress have we made, ethically speaking?
Another thing is, and I believe that this is where the disconcert and dissatisfaction of many people lies, the level of achievements: we do not make all the declarations, in everyday life we have not yet achieved what we do recognize at the level of conscience. In that sense, there has been progress, but we would have to adjust the achievements to the declarations.
How would you define integrity, is it a virtue, is it a value, is it attainable? Integrity is a value when it is understood as acting as one thinks, and also as long as one thinks well, because therein lies the danger, if one does not think well, it is better not to think well. So, integrity has to do with putting into practice everything that we think is really good, that is really valuable and, along these lines, practicing coherence with what we think.

adela curtain ethics

«We have to bring out all our ethical and moral courage and face the future with gallantry, because otherwise many people will suffer along the way, and that is not right», warns the philosopher and professor of Ethics, Adela Cortina, in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
In an interview with Agencia EFE, she assures that society will «change radically» after this crisis, there will be «a before and an after» of it, and affirms that in order to get ahead, all the «moral capacity» and all the «ethical capital» of each one of us will be needed.
«If we realize that the important thing is to be united, because people deserve it and because we have to work together, we will do much better,» says Cortina, who insists that everything depends on the freedom of choice of each person and assures that «there is a lot of room for maneuver» on the part of everyone.
«We are playing a lot every day, although we only remember all these issues at times of great threats, great catastrophes or great wars: at those times we think that we should do things better,» he says.

-Are we so bad that we have to vindicate it? -I interpret sanity as a graft of prudence in the heart of justice. Sanity is very important because it unites reason and heart. A person who is sane is also reasonable. If reason functions without emotions it has no strength. I claim sanity to face a situation like the pandemic.
-In the face of the two models that are confronting each other, American neoliberalism and Chinese capitalist communism, the EU is a necessary third voice because it is social democratic, it believes in political, social, economic and cultural rights. China is an absolutely totalitarian and opaque state. There are those who say that this model has triumphed against the pandemic, but in reality we do not know what is happening, the appearance of the virus was hidden at the beginning and the data they give are not contrasted. Totalitarianism is always harmful because it destroys freedom and does not promote life. In a democratic society it is possible to kick out someone like Trump by democratic means.
