The society is organized with hierarchical religious fanaticism and new castes. In it, women are subjugated; by law they have no right to work, read, write or control money or property. Worldwide infertility has led to the recruitment of the few fertile women left in Gilead, the so-called maids according to an «extremist interpretation» of a Bible verse. Each maid is trained, corrected and educated and then assigned to the homes of political leaders, where they lose their name and adopt a new one formed by the name of the assigned commander with the prefix «De», forcing them to ritualized rape by their masters in order to become pregnant and give children to the family elites.

The handmaid’s tale season 4

The Handmaid’s Tale, published in 1985, is a dystopian novel and one of the most important works of Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. It highlights the social criticism and the treatment of women, frequent themes in her works.
Atwood uses the technique of memories to make a game with two different stories but with the same character, Defred (Offred in English). The work plays from the beginning with the past and the present of the protagonist, although the character’s past is revealed through the reflections that Defred can make.
The play can be classified as a dystopia, but also as a way of showing the role of fact in many past and present societies. It emphasizes theology and the Old Testament, unraveling the forms of government and the consequences of implementing these rigorous mechanisms in today’s society. It reflects the situation of women, who play a fundamental role in the novel. In the words of its author, it is «an imaginary account of what happens when certain not infrequent pronouncements about women are taken to their logical conclusions.»[1][2] In the words of the author, it is «an imaginary account of what happens when certain not infrequent pronouncements about women are taken to their logical conclusions.»[1
