Korchnoi was the great thorn in the side of Russian honor. The grandmaster defected from the USSR in 1976 and became a dissident and a traitor to the Soviet nation, but to stop him there was Karpov. The protégé of the communist regime managed to beat him in the championship of Baguio (Philippines) in 1978 and crush him in the massacre of Merano (Italy) in 1981.
Those two victories -sprinkled with conspiratorial tactics involving everything from spies to parapsychologists- made Karpov a national hero in the Soviet Union, but Korchnoi seemed ready to take revenge. And so it came to that semifinal of the Candidates Tournament in which «Victor the Terrible», dissident, traitor, hated in all the confines of the Soviet Union, faced the new Russian star of the chess firmament, the young and aggressive Kasparov.
Leontxo García: I discovered that I really liked writing when I was still a player and sometimes I wrote for the magazine ‘Jaque’, which was also published in San Sebastián. That’s how in 1983 I discovered that my true vocation was not to try to be a professional player but to try to be a communicator and a journalist. The first thing I did for a general media was for the Basque newspaper Deia. I go to London to the semifinals of candidates Korchnoi-Kasparov and Smyslov-Ribli.
