Leonard slatkin & josé luis garcia! – the four seasons
Soon, however, he would change sides, or rather, he would understand that it is best to be on good terms with all sides, and he found his way into a poetry that is at once reflective and intimate, closely linked to certain cultural references, always avoiding any dissonance.
Because olvido abounds in detailed chronicles of presentations and readings. Alvaro Valverde, after praising the presenters, is careful not to forget the name of any of the attendees and to dedicate a few kind words to each of them. There will be those who think that this part of the diary, having fulfilled its function, should perhaps have remained in the virtual space. But it still has its charm and its sociological and psychological interest.
From time to time there are references to his life as a teacher – a school trip, an end-of-year gift -, avoiding as far as possible any negative aspect, as is exemplary of the house.
The travel chronicles could not be missing. Almost all of Álvaro Valverde’s trips are due to literary motives (a presentation, a reading) and that is why they intermingle gratitude to the hosts with very precise landscape observations.

The poet is not always the best editor of himself. Juan Ramón Jiménez was until a certain date, and a good example of this is his Second Poetic Anthology. Then the desire to make amends would become an uncritical obsession until he reached the point of trying to put into prose all his work in verse.
Antonio Gamoneda, who rewrote his first work after the late encounter of his personal voice with Descripción de la mentira, seems to have been losing his self-criticism capacity at the same time that his process of canonization, initiated in 1987 with the awarding of the National Literature Prize to Edad, the initial compilation, highly revised, of his complete poetry, was accentuated.
An example: «The section Mudanzas is completed with the homonymous chapter that appears in the triple volume (2016) already mentioned so many times», he tells us after having commented on the texts included in that section. How is it completed «with the homonymous chapter» of La prisión transparente -that is «the triple volume» (he calls it so because it includes three works) to which he alludes- if it is integrated by the same texts?

The novelty, as could be expected from a literature professor, are the first ten pages dedicated, in the manner of Andrés Trapiello and his first prologues to his ‘Salón de pasos perdidos’, to his way of understanding the genre of the intimate diary, which anyone can read as a reply. Thus, his criticism of the use of initials: «Initials are only justified in a diary when they fulfill an aesthetic function: to play with the reader’s complicity by allowing him to guess the name, for example, or to turn the specific person alluded to into an archetype. In other cases, they are nothing more than self-censorship scratches. Or simple clumsiness» (Page 11).
And, in addition to that mixture of gossip from the literary world and various personal obsessions that the writer collects and that have made him famous, from time to time something like what poetry reminds us of appears:
«Do I write poems? More and more from time to time. Poetry, at least mine and that of the poets I am most interested in, talks about things I would rather not talk about. I have long since stopped worrying that I will go months and months without writing a poem; I am not even too worried about the possibility of never writing them again. At a certain age one doesn’t want to be a poet, one is content to be happy. And poetry reminds us of everything that prevents us, that will always prevent us, from achieving it» (Page 193).

Poetry takes many forms, one for each reader’s taste. In this book, the baroque game of antitheses alternates with the lightness of the traveler’s note, the perplexities of reality -sometimes so unreal- with the realization of the joyful variety of the world. The poet invites us to stroll through Paris or Rome, New York or Venice, but he also takes us by the hand through the paths of a rural childhood or locks us in the dark room of not knowing where we are going or where we come from. The poet speaks for everyone and in this book several voices are heard, among them that of a woman, beautiful on the outside and on the inside, who never left anyone indifferent. Poetry, even the most desolate in appearance, is a continuous present, a gift that never ends.
