Although the exhibition that has just closed is Manus x Machine: Fashion in the Age of Technology (whose translation from Latin and English is Manus x Machine: Fashion in the Age of Technology) that we show you in The Style piece by piece, the film tells how the previous exhibition, China Through The Looking Glass, which opened on the first Monday of May 2015, was created, organized and carried out. It was intended to show how Chinese culture and fashion have inspired and influenced the creation of fashion in the West, as well as to raise awareness of Chinese fashion today and throughout history.

International Workers’ Day or May Day is the commemoration of the world labor movement. It is a day that has been habitually used to make different social and labor demands in favor of the working classes by, fundamentally, the anarchist and communist movements, among others. It is a national holiday in most countries of the world.
Since its establishment in most countries (although the consideration of the holiday was in many cases late) by agreement of the Socialist Workers Congress of the Second International, held in Paris in 1889, it is a day of struggle and tribute to the Chicago Martyrs. These anarchist syndicalists were executed in the United States for participating in the days of struggle for the achievement of the eight-hour workday, which had its origin in the strike that began on May 1, 1886 and its climax three days later, on May 4, in the Haymarket Revolt. From then on, it became a day to vindicate workers’ rights in a general sense that is commemorated to a greater or lesser extent all over the world.

Anna Wintour, the influential editor of Vogue and organizer of the gala, which has been webcast for the first time, arrived early and explained that the Met’s show will be «diverse, inclusive and sustainable» to «symbolize that America is made of many cultures,» something that was also reflected in the party.
A magnet for stars, the gala attracted Kim Kardashian, although you could only tell it was about her by her figure, as she was sheathed in a head-to-toe black leotard; the opposite extreme to her half-sister Kendall Jenner, who wore a completely see-through, sparkly dress.
Making a spectacular appearance was Billie Eilish, who distanced herself from her rebellious and ‘punk’ image to present herself as a modern-day Marilyn Monroe – or a Holiday Barbie, in her words – in a peach-colored gown with a deep neckline and long train by Oscar de la Renta.
Also highlighting the celebration of the LGBTQ community was Lil Nas X, an openly gay rapper, arriving «Lady Gaga style» and peeling off layers to reveal three outfits; Ben Platts dressed as a «gay cowboy» and Daniel Levy sporting a plea for equal marriage on his chest.

I am writing these lines on October 12 in the coffee shop at the Curzon Cinemas in London’s Mayfair district. This basically independent cinema chain regularly incorporates documentaries on social and cultural issues in its programming.
The first Monday in May is a documentary that explains the conception and the setting up of the fashion exhibition China Through the Looking Glass, the annual event that the Metropolitan Museum of New York organizes around fashion (in this case, the West-East dialogue in clothing) under the strict and amusing direction of Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue.
