Underneath the armor, there is a dark orange undercoat. His helmet even has a built-in flashlight (which could probably be Jim’s Vespa headlight). For the most part, Toby is a cheerful guy who is always there for his friends when they need a laugh or moral support.
During gym class, Toby tries to convince Jim to talk to Clara, which he somehow manages to do. As Jim tries to talk to Clara, Toby struggles with the climbing rope, barely making an inch, until he finally collapses from exhaustion. Because of his lack of exercise, Coach Lawrence criticizes him.[1] He is then taken to the locker room.
In the locker room, Toby struggles to put on his own socks while talking to Jim about the school play, Romeo and Juliet, and that Jim should audition. After school, Jim and Toby witness Steve Palchuk harassing Eli Pepperjack, who was trying to tell the school about seeing creatures with stone for skin, fighting in the canals (the one Jim and Toby passed on the way to school).[1] After school, Jim and Toby are told that they are not going to see any of the creatures with stone for skin, and that they are going to fight in the canals.[1
