Después de siete años al frente del histórico periódico en español de Los Ángeles, La Opinión, el redactor jefe Gabriel Lerner deja el cargo, tras haber dirigido el medio a través de una serie de crisis y haber mantenido intacta su misión de servir a la comunidad latina a través del periodismo comunitario.
En una entrevista con EMS, Lerner recordó los 22 años que trabajó para La Opinión, desde que se incorporó a ella como ayudante del editor de la página editorial, en 1999. Antes de incorporarse, vivió 24 años en Israel, donde trabajó como reportero y editor de un periódico en español, «El Tiempo», y como corresponsal de radio para varios medios en España y América Latina.
Pero fue en La Opinión, periódico al que se incorporó cuando estaba cerca de la cima de su popularidad y éxito, donde Lerner practicó el oficio del periodismo, escribiendo y dirigiendo un grupo de periodistas, muchos de los cuales ya llevaban años en el periódico y conocían íntimamente a la comunidad.
«Fue un gran momento para La Opinión. No teníamos la presión que luego experimentaríamos, cuando cada empleado tenía que hacer el trabajo de 3 o 4, teníamos muchos reporteros, teníamos temas que eran cubiertos por expertos en la materia», dice Lerner.
